Low cost targets and practical manufacturing techniques
have historically limited heat sink designs. With metal injection molding,
engineers can creatively optimize the shape and form of the heatsink to maximize
performance without cost consequences. The improved thermal performance is
critical with compact, high power devices.
The MIM process allows thin walled heat sinks to be injection molded to maximize
surface area in a compact package. Walls can be a thin as 0.3 mm with similar
inter-spacing.
This particular design employs a wave pattern which would be impossible to
extrude and cost prohibitive to machine. It is an excellent example of the
design freedom offered with metal injection molding.
